I played with the distortion of the water in this painting, as a way of also exploring a distortion of the subject’s identity. There’s a sense of isolation and also, for the viewer, I hoped for a connection. The figure is solitary and surrounded by water and silence, but I wanted the viewer to empathise with her and her effort to surface.
